About Mr. Pavi Agrawal

Mr Agrawal is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Mater Private Hospital and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, in Dublin. He specialises in small incision cataract surgery and the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. Mr Agrawal’s training has been in international centres of excellence. In 2002, he graduated from Cambridge University UK, having read medicine at Downing College, Cambridge. He also holds a first-class honours degree in biochemistry. His residency training was in the West Midlands where he developed a keen sub-specialist interest in cataract and glaucoma. Following this, he completed a two-year medical and surgical glaucoma fellowship at the world prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital, where he worked closely with two of the UK’s founding fathers of modern-day glaucoma filtration surgery.
Prior to Mr Agrawal’s appointment to the Mater Private he held the post of Consultant Ophthalmologist at Nottingham University NHS Trust, UK for almost 10 years. His dedication to ophthalmic teaching and research was recognised with the appointment to Honorary Assistant Professor by the University of Nottingham, School of Medicine in 2020. In 2024, he was appointed a consultant at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital with sub-specialist interests in cataract surgery, glaucoma and the medical, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma.
Mr Agrawal is the author of over 20 peer-reviewed scientific papers as well as a book chapter in the world’s best selling glaucoma textbook for specialists. He has published in the some of the most prestigious ophthalmology journals and presented his research work at major national and international ophthalmology conferences and is regularly invited to speak, chair and moderate sessions at them. He has recruited patients to major international glaucoma studies such as the LIGHT trial and TAGS. He also holds a distinction in a postgraduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery conducted by Ulster University, an accolade awarded to only a handful of international cataract surgeons each year.
Mr Agrawal has performed several thousand cataract operations with a complication rate significantly lower than the national average. He is vastly experienced in glaucoma filtration surgery including augmented trabeculectomy and aqueous-shunt tube surgery and has performed hundreds of glaucoma laser treatments including selective laser trabeculoplasty and cyclodiode laser. Mr Agrawal is highly skilled in some of the latest minimally invasive glaucoma surgical (MIGS) treatments to help manage and stabilize glaucoma including the Preserflo Microshunt, iStents, viscocanaloplasty and trabeculotomy. He has successfully trained several international glaucoma fellows in these advancing techniques all of whom have gone onto have very successful careers. Mr Agrawal is a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists as well as a member of the Irish College of Ophthalmologists, the European Glaucoma Society and the UK & Eire Glaucoma Society. He is fully appraised and revalidated by the General Medical Council and Irish Medical Council.
Mr Agrawal is married to his wife Caoimhe and they have 3 young children together. As a family, they relocated back to Dublin in 2023 and are enjoying all the city has to offer including walks around Dublin bay, hiking in the mountains and of course the Dublin food scene! Mr Agrawal very much enjoys trekking, with Machu Picchu in southern Peru and Everest Base Camp in the Himalayas being some of his major accomplishments.
Mr Agrawal’s aim is to provide the highest standard of glaucoma therapy, cataract surgery and ophthalmic expertise in a caring and informed manner, as well as the most up-to-date and appropriate treatment for his patients.
